Cpd23: Thing 6 - networking and stuff

Since getting into the library field I've really been impressed by the opportunities and willingness for networking and getting involved with organisations and groups.  Personally, I've been able to get involved with lots of networking, training, visits, special interest groups and local cross sector working groups.  Looking at online networking I can really see the benefits it and how it can help with online branding, current awareness AND connectedness (multi-tasking - got to love it).

As mentioned in Thing 4 - I'm still fairly new to the Twitterverse and am getting to grips with it more as time goes on, I'm following a fair number of people and organisations now on it and need to work more on making sure I'm following (and responding to) the right messages and people and getting a bit more out there and doing some tweeting myself...

Looking at LinkedIn, this is something I joined some time ago but was fairly quickly put off by the amount of information you had to put out there and, what then seemed to be, the lack of active library based groups.  I think the example profiles look great, but am going to concentrate on other online networking tools for now, and may come back to LinkedIn in the future.

Onto Facebook, which I've been using for a long time past, though have become less enamoured with over time and privacy issues...  I use this pretty much only for personal networks rather than professional networking (though see that there is a blurring between the two) and think I'll stick with this split for now, though I'll definitely be checking again on my privacy settings after reading the Guardian article Helen links to.

LISNPN I've started following recently and wish I had been aware of when I was starting out in libraries all those years ago... (just realised that isn't as ironic a comment as I'd thought, being 7 years since I started on my library journey!) I am going to give joining a go and see how I get on with it.

Librarians at Teachers Network I've also been aware of for a while, and sadly missed out on getting a place at the London TeachMeet event, I'm going to keep following LAT on Twitter in the hope I'll be able to get along to another one....

Finally, CILIP Communities, I already subscribe to several of the blogs on here and find CILIPinfo puts out a lot of useful tweets.
