CPD23: Thing 23 - the end of the road...?

Phew, Thing 23? Really?!

I am really glad to have completed CPD23 and think I have really benefited from taking part in it in terms of finding out about and using new tools (Prezi being my new favourite tool in this respect) and more generally in improving my reflective skills, current awareness and connecting with others in the information world.

As I wrote for Thing 19 here, I have a fair number of things sparked by CPD23 that I still want to complete, so this definitely isn't the end of the road for me and CPD23!

My main goal now that I'm at the end of CPD23 is to complete my Chartership.  As part of this I'm going to be using this blog to record my development activities and spur me on to complete it.

After completing my short course in web design, which I'll be blogging about soon, I've realised that I want to go further with this so this is another area of development I'll be looking into.

So finally, a big big thank you to the organisers and contributors to CPD23, it has been a brilliant programme and I am really grateful to have had the chance to take part in it.

Is CPD23 2012 on the cards...?

CPD23: Thing 22 - voluntary work

As I wrote in my library routes post here, volunteering in my local public library was my first experience of library work and the catalyst for pursuing an information career.  I found volunteering a really positive experience and it gave the the chance to get involved in things I would never otherwise have been able to get involved in and to develop my library skills.

Working full time, I don't really have the time or opportunity to do any library volunteering but it is something I would love to get involved with again at some point.

But. I do worry as a professional librarian that by volunteering I could be putting a paid member of staff's role in danger.  This is something I would consider really carefully were I able to get involved in volunteering again.

CPD23: Thing 21 - the scary world of CVs

As part of my Chartership, I have been working on my CV to submit as part of this.  I agree completely about how regularly your CV needs to be updated  - every time I amend my Chartership CV it seems like there is something to update on it.

Since I completed my MA I have kept a record of the training and development events I have attended/completed - this has been absolutely invaluable in putting together my CV and I am really glad that I did it.  Maria Giovanna's suggestion to keep a record of activities that demonstrate your skills is brilliant and I'm going to start putting together a record of projects I've done and what skills these demonstrate - I just wish I had done this before too!

CPD23: Thing 20 - other maps

As I blogged about my own route into the information world here, this is going to be a fairly short post.
I have revisited the Library Routes project and read about other's routes into the profession - it is really interesting to read about how people got into libraries in the first place and how their careers have developed.
I also saw the Library Day in the Life project earlier this year, sadly it took place when I was away but it's something I'd do in the future.

CPD23: Thing 19 - re-visiting, re-collecting and re-organising

I'm going to be using this post to revisit all of the parts in the Things so far that I have set myself to do.  As I'm in the middle of induction season at work, it may be some time before they are all complete, but I will be revisiting this list and adding and amending development activities regularly.

Thing 3 - personal branding - I have linked my blog and twitter account with descriptions, photos and links but, when I have time, I am going to look at creating a more coherent (and unique!) design

Thing 4 - current awareness - I think I am generally doing well on this, but need to have a look and see what people and organisations I'm missing out on following

Thing 6 - networking - I've yet to join LISNPN (though I follow their blog and discussions) and still need to do this

Thing 10 - as I said for this Thing, one thing I want to learn in the future is web design, I'm currently completing a weekend short course on web design and will report back on it here when finished.

Thing 12 - as I mentioned in this Thing, I've recently got a smartphone and, though I now using a lot of functions on it, I still want to explore further what I can do with it

Thing 17 -  I loved trying out Prezi and hope to look at doing more with it and how it can be incorporated into online guidance for students

Thing 18 - I am going to look at the Arcadia and Careers Group podcasts mentioned in this Thing

Chartership - the best at the end of the list! Once I have completed CPD23, I'm going to focus on completing my Chartership - and hopefully use this blog to record my activities and spur me on.

CPD23: Thing 18 - online casting

I have used both Jing and Audacity before - I was lucky enough to take part in a training scheme in my organisation on using online tools in enhancing learning and teaching, and these were two of those that were used.

Jing is available across the network and has been used in the LRC  web pages to demonstrate using the online catalogue and eResources.  I found Jing really straightforward to use, the only problem being when you make a mistake, you have to start all over again...

I have used Audacity for recording a voice-over for a video on referencing and really liked how much you can play around with the audio once you've recorded it - chopping and changing and re-ordering.  I imported the audio into MovieMaker and created the visuals to go with it to make the video.

I haven't looked at podcasts series yet but will be looking at the Arcadia and Careers Group ones.

CPD23: Thing 17 - online mediums

I have previously used Slideshare and have wanted to try out Prezi for ages so have been really looking forward to doing so for this Thing.  I decided to make my first Prezi based on the micro-teaching session I did for my PTLLS qualification on planning a assessed assignment. This content was originally delivered through a mix of PowerPoint, individual activities and group work so I thought it would make an interesting conversion to Prezi.

I found using Prezi pretty straightforward and the instructional videos really helpful.   From looking at other Prezis I can see it is possible to do really good things with it and share really easily.  My first attempt at a Prezi is below, definitely room for improvement, but certainly a tool I will be using again.
