CoLRiC Roadshow - surviving in a cold climate

On 23rd June I attended the CoLRiC (acronyms expanded below... ) roadshow at CILIP HQ in London. The, very relevant, topic for discussion was 'surviving in a cold climate'.

The afternoon began with attendees splitting into groups to discuss 5 key issues; considering  experiences of the issue, how it was affecting them and any solutions to problems encountered.  The 5 issues under consideration were e-books and e-resources, budgets, demonstrating value, library/LRC environment and enrichment activities.

From these discussions, and subsequent feedback, several interesting examples of practice were discussed including:
 - holding drop in sessions for staff and students on general research skills and using specific tools and resources (including Mahara, Xerte and Advanced Powerpoint)
 -  promoting ebook collections through sending out ebook reading lists to staff, purchasing ebook readers, loading them with the library's ebook collection and loaning out to students, and,
 - offering a proof reading service and making the LRC an assignment drop off  for access students.

Overall, the common themes in the discussion were the need for libraries and LRCs to be pro-active and to evolve the service offered to match organisational needs.

The next session looked at the new peer accreditation scheme which has been developed by CoLRiC.   The structure of the scheme is based around the four areas of leadership, management and vision, resources, integration into teaching and learning and quality assurance.   The value of taking part in the scheme was also highlighted as a key way to prove worth and improve the service offered.
